The Coastal Walkway runs 13.2km from Port Taranaki to the eastern end of Bell Block Beach. You can enjoy a shorter out-and-back walk without taking on the whole route.
Pick your start and turnaround
Think about what you want from the outing: sea views before breakfast, a walk into town, a bridge visit or a longer coastal day. Start with one destination and decide whether you will return along the same path. An out-and-back plan makes it easy to shorten the walk if the weather changes or your group wants a break.
| Your plan | A section to consider |
|---|---|
| City and coast | Start around the Wind Wand and combine a waterfront section with time in central New Plymouth. |
| Beach and village | Use Fitzroy as your starting area and include a beach stop before returning to the village. |
| A bridge outing | Plan a section around Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, with Lake Rotomanu as a nearby access option. |
Our Te Rewa Rewa Bridge access guide is useful if the bridge is your main destination. For a beach-first day, begin with Fitzroy Beach.
Use the map for distance and facilities
Open the council’s Coastal Walkway map and route information before leaving. Choose an access point, locate parking if you need it and check the facilities along your intended section. Follow current notices and any diversions on the route.
The published total describes the coastal route, not a round trip from your accommodation. Add the distance from your property to the path, the section you want to cover and the journey home. If you finish at a different access point, arrange the return transport before you set off.
For children or a mixed-pace group, a clear turnaround landmark is more useful than a target for completing the whole walkway. Leave time for beach stops, photographs and a rest rather than treating a map’s walking estimate as your schedule.
Share the path comfortably
- Keep left and give other people space, especially around busy access points.
- If cycling, wear a helmet and slow down when passing walkers.
- Move aside to stop for photographs so the main path stays clear.
- Carry water, sun protection and a layer for coastal wind.
- Stay on the route and follow signs around works or closures.
Check the forecast before choosing a longer outing. A shorter section with an easy return can be a better fit for a breezy afternoon. If you prefer an inland walk, compare the Te Henui Walkway and its streamside route.
