Read the distance as a circular walk

The council describes Te Henui Walkway as a medium-grade, 5.9km circular walk taking about two hours. Choose your own entrance and turnaround to match your group.

Start at East End or join farther inland

Te Henui Walkway follows the stream between East End Reserve and Cumberland Street in Merrilands, with several entrances along the way. East End works well if you want to combine the streamside walk with time by the coast.

Open the official Te Henui Walkway map and find your starting point before leaving your accommodation. Mark where you will turn back or cross to complete your chosen route. Save the map to your phone so it is easy to check at a junction.

If the whole walk does not fit your day, choose a shorter section. Starting farther inland changes the route and distance; it is worth tracing both the outward and return legs rather than assuming every entrance leads to the same circuit.

Plan the return as well as the outward walk

The council’s distance and time describe a circular outing. They are not a one-way promise from every access point. Leave extra time for rests, photographs and the pace of the slowest person in your group.

Make East End a useful starting point

East End Reserve has parking, toilets and a playground. It gives a mixed-age group somewhere to organise bags, take a break and decide how far to go. Check the council’s walkway information for route details before setting out.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes with grip for the conditions.
  • Take water and a layer, even if you are beginning with a short section.
  • Check the map at crossings so everyone follows the same return route.
  • Choose a turnaround before anyone becomes tired.
  • Follow closures and track notices if conditions change.
