New Plymouth Beaches: Choose Your Beach Day

New Plymouth beaches offer different ways to spend a coastal day. We compare locations and access so you can choose a beach that fits your plans.

Choose by access and the rest of your day

Fitzroy, East End, Back Beach, Bell Block and Oakura offer different starting points. Pick the location that suits your group, then check weather, water quality and conditions.

Compare the places before you go

Which beach fits your plan?
BeachA useful way to plan the visit
FitzroyCombine the beach with the village and a Coastal Walkway section.
East EndConsider a coastal stop alongside the Te Henui streamside walk.
Back BeachPlan a western-coast outing with care for the access down and return from the sand.
Bell BlockExplore the eastern coastal area and choose a walkway access point from the map.
OakuraMake a separate village-and-beach day southwest of New Plymouth.

This is a starting point for choosing a location, rather than a swimming recommendation. The conditions on the day and your group’s abilities should decide what you do at the water.

Choose a walk, a beach stop or both

For a day based around the shared coastal path, start with Fitzroy Beach and the Coastal Walkway. Decide how far you want to walk before you add time on the sand. An out-and-back route leaves the return simple.

At East End, you can combine the coast with a section of Te Henui Walkway. These are different experiences, so decide which is your main outing and keep the other short if needed.

For Back Beach, consider the route down and the effort of returning with bags or children. For Oakura, allow time for travel and the village as well as the beach. One well-chosen location is enough for a relaxed day.

Make the decision again when you arrive

Check Taranaki coastal water-quality information before leaving, then read signs at the beach. Look at the weather, surf and tide conditions, and follow lifeguard advice where a patrol is operating.

  • Choose an activity that everyone in your group can manage.
  • Keep children supervised near water.
  • Use the patrolled swimming area between the flags when it is operating.
  • Allow for the return route and changing conditions.
  • Bring water, sun protection and a layer for the wind.

If conditions do not suit the beach plan, move the outing inland or indoors. Our New Plymouth activities guide includes gardens and museum options, so changing the plan need not mean losing the day.

Stay near the coast you want to explore

For Fitzroy, compare our Residence apartments. Residence Seven welcomes up to eight guests and has a full kitchen and laundry, useful when you want to prepare meals and settle in after an outdoor day.

Our coastal accommodation guide distinguishes a beachfront setting from a village base with the beach nearby. If Oakura is the centre of your trip, compare our Oakura homes before choosing New Plymouth as a base. Match the property’s layout to your group as carefully as its location.

Your questions

Which New Plymouth beach should I choose for a walk?

Choose by your starting point and the return you want. Fitzroy and East End suit plans linked to the Coastal Walkway; Oakura and Back Beach can be separate outings.

Can I decide where to swim from a beach guide?

Use current water-quality information, local signs, conditions and lifeguard advice on the day. A general location guide cannot describe changing conditions.
